Second Career

Second CareerThe objective of Second Career is to support laid off, unemployed individuals who require skills training to assist them to find employment in occupations with demonstrated labour market prospects in Ontario. The ultimate goal of SC is to return individuals to employment by the most cost effective path. For detailed infomation please follow this link:

You must:

  • Have been laid off on or after January 1, 2005 (can be on salary continuance or service)

(laid off includes employment contract ended, or left work due to medical reasons or you received EI maternity or parental benefits and seek to re-enter the labour force)

  • Be unemployed (or working less than 20 hours a week) or have taken an interim job to make ends meet after the  layoff (interim job must be NOC D)
  • Demonstrate occupational demand for the training request with evidence of good employment prospects locally or within Ontario.

You will be assessed for suitability for the Second Career program on a points system based on the following criteria:

  • History of job search
  • Duration of unemployment
  • Educational attainment
  • Work history
  • Labour market prospects
  • Types of training
  • Experience – Workplace skills

If you meet the eligibility criteria and obtain the required suitability score, then you will be assessed for financial need through the MTCU. You maybe be required to contribute towards the total cost of approved training: Assessments are based on

  • Household Income
  • Living expenses (there are maximum amounts set for expense categories)
  • Course and incremental costs
  • Costs associated with disability needs
