Position purpose:

Reporting to the Team Coordinator, Parking, ensures the safety and protection of all campus users and of University property by patrolling campus grounds. Enforces general laws and traffic regulations, including the Trespass to Property Act, City of Ottawa By-Laws and University of Ottawa parking and traffic regulations. Collects and safeguards daily cash revenue from parking equipment, while maintaining personal security. Performs traffic controls on campus to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike. Responds to emergency calls and carries out the emergency-response plan as required. Liaises and maintains excellent communications with police, fire, emergency and University authorities. Investigates incidents and ensures that all developments and leads are updated and pursued. Acts as a University of Ottawa ambassador by providing information, guidance and assistance to visitors and to the University community; in this capacity, also promotes security and works to prevent crime. Assists the University Emergency Response Team, under the mandate of Protection Services. Provides first aid and CPR services on campus.

This position is part of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) bargaining unit and the terms of employment are currently subject to the University’s policies but will be eventually subject to the collective agreement that is currently being negotiated between the University of Ottawa and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).


Essential Qualifications

Postsecondary education diploma in Security Management or equivalent diploma
Knowledge of principles governing the protection of individuals and property normally acquired through law/security or security/protection training given by a recognized institution
Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence
Private Investigator License or ability to obtain this certification
Valid driver’s license in the province of Ontario (Class G or equivalent)
Experience working as a security officer
Experience working with the public in conflict situations
Ability to give first aid care (certified for WHMIS, First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen administration)
Experience using computer systems and software such as Windows, word processing, databases, e-mail and Internet
Ability to work with minimum supervision, under pressure and to show initiative
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written); to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced or higher proficiency level for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute
