Job Title: Violence Against Women Outreach Worker

Status: Part-time contract until March 31, 2024

Hours: 21 hours/week (0.6 full-time equivalent) – Ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) is required

Salary: $49,554 annually (pro-rated to 0.6 FTE)

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the CH Manager, and participating as part of the CH team, the VAW Outreach Worker is responsible for supporting women, individually and in groups, who are trying to establish lives separate from their abusers.   The outreach worker will assist women by helping them establish a network of supports and to maintain housing. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiate contact with women who reside at Hollyer House and former Chrysalis House Clients;
  • Provide crisis intervention, through telephone and personal contact with abused women;
  • Provide support, information, resources and referral;
  • Facilitate and empower women to develop action plans and to implement these plans;
  • Assess, with women, what community resources might best serve their needs;
  • Support women who are struggling with addiction and/or mental health issues;
  • Accompany women to community appointments, as needed;
  • Assist women to develop safety plans for themselves and their children;
  • Maintain a system of contacting Hollyer House clients and former CH clients on a regular basis to relieve the stress of isolation in a new community;
  • Ensure that service is accessible to all women, by accessing communication and interpretive services as requested;
  • Advocate for the needs of abused women and children in all work situations, as needed;
  • Advocate with third parties in specific cases (e.g., landlords, interactions with Children’s Aid Society, court appearances, enrolling children in school;
  • Participate in advocacy and coordination committees about services available, gaps in services and issues affecting abused women and their children;
  • Promote participation of abused women in activities designed to educate and/or advocate for prevention.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent in education and training;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience direct work with abused women;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based model of intervention and health equity principles;
  • Knowledge of Violence Against Women issues and counselling principles;
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention skills;
  • Knowledge of legal, financial, housing, employment and training resources in the community;
  • Experience in community development;
  • Knowledge of addictions, mental health and VAW resources in the community;
  • Knowledge and proficiency in program development, delivery and evaluation;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • Multitasking abilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and serve the needs of diverse communities;
  • Ability to promote teamwork and strength in a volunteer and staff group.
